The POC has developed an Academy for those looking to learn from scratch or more experienced SUPSurf paddlers that want to tone their skills. With the shakeup of the pandemic and a need to re-invent areas of what we do on the water, the POC decided to take its passion for SUPSurf and partner with close friend and professional SUPSurfer Jose Ruiz and launch the Tropical SUPSurf Academy. Jose brings years of experience of SUPSurfing professionally, coaching, and mentored by the top names and brands you will find in the sport. Jose’s level of professionalism, patience, and love for teaching made him the perfect partner for POC’s vision of opening one of the top SUPSurfing instructional schools found anywhere on the globe.
Tropical SurfSUP Academy offers small size courses with attention to service and running our operation on a personalized level. All guests are evaluated at the start and end of each course. Video analysis is done breaking down every move made, ocean knowledge while being a lifelong course is discussed, the surfing lifestyle is shared, and a lot of coffee is shared for those looking to do dawn patrol!
Costa Rica is a mecca for surfing, and the waves are sized perfectly for those looking to learn. Join us as our only goal is to keep you smiling and helping us spread a new pandemic of the love for SUPSurfing and the lifestyle it brings.

Beginner to Advanced (This itinerary has the luxury of adapting to different levels of adventure)
Do you have a passion for being near the ocean, and you feel that just sitting in the sand doesn’t do it anymore. The fast-growing sport of SUPSurfing has made visiting the beach an entirely new experience. With the learning curve easier than traditional pop-up surfing, the SUPSurf wave changing people’s lives is now easier than ever to join.
Here at POC our passion for water has taught us that there is so much more to river rafting or 1-hour surf classes. There are entirely new lifestyles and possible adventures with just a little effort. After one week, we have seen people become total SUPSurf addicts from never getting on a board to in only three days doing bottom turns and becoming a lifelong surfer.
It’s never too late. Most of our guests are in their 40’s or 50’s starting SUPSurf for the first time. The idea of already standing makes it possible for almost anyone. Now, if you want to make it a little more challenging, take a look at TSA owner and professional SUPsurfer Jose Ruiz, and you will see just how far you can go in SUPSurf. But our goal here at TSA is to make some noise and let everyone know that SUPSurfing is not just for people that have been surfing all their lives.
Our goal is to share what we love, put smiles on faces, and make sure we and all that visit us take more time to enjoy life! We make all that happen through our week-long SUPSurf Academy.

Welcome to one of the best-kept secrets in all of the surfing and traveling communities. Costa Rica gets heavy rains during August, September, October, and November. But there is a small corner on the bottom Caribbean peninsula with sunny blue skies, crystal clear water, white sandy beaches, and November get heavy rains in all of Costa Rica and waves perfect for your SUPboards all day long.
This part of Costa Rica is the home of Tropical Surf’s Academy Caribbean operation. Here is where day one of your adventure will take you. All students will meet in San Jose, at the Juan Santa Maria Airport or if you have an afternoon flight, we suggest showing up the day before, and we will pick you up at your hotel.
The drive from San Jose is about 4 hours, and we will make some stops along the way. Now, if you think 4 hours sounds like a lot, try not to sleep. You will be passing through the Braulio Carrillo National Park, which is arguable the most scenic National Park in all of Costa Rica. Also, your guide will be giving you general information on Costa Rica and all its pura vida. After you pass through the park, you will arrive in the Caribbean lowlands, where you will make your way to the port city of Limon. There is not much worth stopping for in Limon, but we know a lady who makes some of the tastiest afro-Caribbean bread that we love to stop for our coffee during the week.
Our final destination will be a 1-hour and 20-minute drive down the coast from Limon. Once you arrive in the southern Caribbean of Costa Rica, you will feel like you have come to another country. The southern Caribbean has all the great things about Costa Rica and more. The wildlife is more plentiful, the culture is richer with an Afro-Caribbean influence, the sand is whiter, the fruits are tastier, and the energy is for the surfer at heart. While we love the Pacific of Costa Rica, the southern Caribbean is a place like no other during the fall months.
Once we arrive at the TSA Lodge, we will get you settled in and have our orientation dinner. Here you will receive your material, and the learning will begin. No time to waste as we take pride in nothing more than making our guests the best possible SUPSurfers they are capable of becoming.

Let’s say once you get up and have your coffee, we will give a short lecture on the safety and history of SUPSurf. Here you will learn everything you need to know to keep you safe through day one and a little homage to the legends who have come before us. Maybe one day, there will be a SUPSurf Academy teaching about the next Laird Hamilton or Duke Kahanamoku sitting in our class!
After we summon the SUP gods to join us during the week, it’s off to the water; we will start with a short session in flat water. You have been on the plane and long car ride, so we want to get your legs adjusted to the water. Don’t worry; it won’t be long because we know everyone wants the waves, which is where we will be headed after lunch.
We will head back to TSA Lodge for some lunch, and you will have a chance to relax, watch surf videos with the guides, or just enjoy the wildlife.
After the food has digested, it’s back to the water where you will be surfing with the coaches until dark. This will also be the first session for video footage. GoPro’s, cameras, and drones will be out and about as we work on getting the best possible footage for your evening video analysis.
Once the sun drops and we have everyone back at the TSA Lodge, we will have dinner, drinks, and video analysis. This often runs as late as it needs to go while many questions are asked.

Dawn Surf Session? Sunrise yoga? Or just coffee on your balcony? These are the hardest decisions of being at TSA.
No matter what you do, just be ready for another full morning of SUPSurfing and coaching. Today we will be doing a morning session with only half an afternoon session. The nearby Gandoca Wildlife Refuge is just too beautiful not to take the quick hike. More times than not, we still have time for an afternoon session of surfing.
After breakfast, we will surf until lunch and then take a short rest. We will then head to the nearby Manzanillo Gandoca Wildlife Refuge. Here you will see breath-taking views, more wildlife, and Costa Rica’s most beautiful and secluded beaches.
After we enjoy the Refuge, it’s back to strapping on the leash and working on our skills. Your coaches will still have 2 hours to work on your form with your today, and an evening video analysis will be after dinner.

Now that you have done six days of Tropical SUPSurf Academy we know we will have you ready for your first official SUPSurf Trip.
After breakfast, we will load the boards up on a local boat, and our boat captain will take us to the nearby area of Punta Mona. This is one of the most scenic places on the Caribbean coastline, but it is also remote. Our only access will be by boat, and we will be SUPSurfing from the ship.
This is an excellent adventure that even the coaches get excited about, so if you have never starred in a surf movie, then now is your time!
After a long morning with lunch on the boat, we will arrive back at the TSA Lodge around 2 pm. Here we will have some local guests give you a demonstration of the sacred cacao fruit. The cacao was plentiful in the southern Caribbean until fungi took most of it out. It has made a comeback, and small boutique chocolatiers have been having a field day making some of the tastiest chocolate you can imagine in recent years. If you have a sweet tooth or are just interested in chocolate’s history, then we know you will enjoy this after your day of surfing.
In the evening, we will make dinner at the lodge and just relax as we share stories about our SUPSurf adventure to Punta Mona.

This will be your last official SUPSurf coaching session. Your coaches will be working on your evaluation today and getting you ready not to end your surfing career today but keep you motivated to take your SUPSurf career to the next level.
We will have lunch at the lodge and then transfer back to San Jose where you will be dropped off in an airport hotel.
Although we do very much highly suggest that you book the one night extension to our river lodge and experience some fresh water and one of the top 5 most scenic rivers on the planet, the famous Pacuare River.
You will raft into the lodge and stay the night in our remote river lodge and then raft the canyon the following day. The first day of rafting is very mild which is why for our TSA Students we offer the option of a one day River SUP course if you do the add on. It’s a great way to wash the saltwater off your body and, who knows, maybe even go home with a passion for surfing river waves.
At this point we are sure you are tired and ready to get home. We hope that your experience was amazing and we hope you come back to visit soon.
Jose Ruiz has a passion for surfing that is only second to his passion for teaching. Jose has years working under some of the top SUPSurf coaches n the planet, paddling for Infinity, and developing his professional skill level to become one of the top SUPSurf coaches in Costa Rica. Jose is a native to the area of Nosara and has fulfilled his dream of launching his own SUPSurf Academy after working as a coach for the top SUPSurf Camps in the area. Jose has a level of patients, perfect English, and a gift for understanding every skill level on the water that his past guest seeking out Jose for advice year after year.
The POC camp is an extension of the POC lodge and while the POC Lodge is located with vast views of the Pacuare River Canyon the POC Camp is down on the river’s edge. While it might not have the view of the POC Lodge it sits on one of the calmest sections of the river making the POC Camp home to one of the river Pacuare’s best spots for taking a swim and relaxing on the river’s edge.
POCsito is a favorite among so many of our guests. It is a glamping experience with some of the important comforts of home.
Started in 2011 is the POC lodge. If you haven’t figured it out by now POC lodge is our own lodge and what we like to call the “baby” of the P.O.C. Adventure Company. We wanted a lodge on our favorite part of Costa Rica which is the Pacuare River and with the help of locally harvested supplies and labor, the POC Lodge was born.
This is a 180-acre property that runs over 1 mile of the Pacuare River. Our goal has always been to offer as much comfort as possible without steering too far away from our roots of just roughing it on the river’s edge. Our lodge has hot water, a splash of luxury in the rooms, and 5-Star service and attention to our guests.
Our favorite part about the lodge is that we built a short hike up from the river’s edge. We know we have the best views of the Pacuare River canyon and unfortunately pictures don’t even do it justice.
Arenal Paraiso, Arenal
Have you ever wanted to stay the night at the base of an active volcano? Well here is your chance. The Arenal Paraiso is located at the base of the Arenal Volcano with breath-taking views of the perfectly cone-shaped volcano.
Here at Arenal Paraiso’s, you will enjoy the beautiful property which offers much more than just a view. The property has numerous bungalows that offer a splash of luxury while surrounded by lush tropical rainforest. After a day of adventure, you will love making your way back to relax or hang out in the pool at Arenal Paraiso.
Located at the edge of the white sandy beaches of Costa Rica sits the Shawandha lodge. A perfect blend of eco-style luxury along with the sounds of the ocean and vibrant ambiance of the rainforest.
Shawandha lodge is set up with individual bungalows made out of local wood. You will be sure to wake up to the sound of the local residents such as the howler monkeys and green macaws. After your day of adventure, you will have a chance to relax and enjoy the beautiful swimming pool at the Shawandha Lodge.
Hotel Villa Florencia, Turrialba
Located in the valley of Turrialba surrounded by sugar-cane plantations and views of the smoking Turrialba Volcano sits an old plantation home that has been renovated into a beautiful small hotel named Villa Florencia.
This is a great hotel with a beautiful pool and plenty of space to take long morning or afternoon hikes. The Villa Florencia hotel is a chance to enjoy luxury while feeling like you stook back in time. While you are in the valley don’t forget to look up as the Turrialba Volcano can often be seen doing small eruptions from across the valley.
Casa Turire, Turrialba
Casa Turire has been one of our favorites since we started. The grounds are some of the lushest you will find anywhere in Costa Rica. Casa Turire sits in the valley of Turrialba surrounded by mountains and the beautiful Turrialba Volcano. The most amazing part about Casa Turire other than its great restaurant and home-made sugar cane ice cream is that it sits on a peninsula surrounded by Lake Angostura offering great morning hikes, birding, or SUPing around the lake.
