ADVENTURE OVERVIEW

Costa Rica: Raft, Zip, SUP, Surf, Bike

Experience one of the most epic adventure weeks in all of America’s. Located 2 and a half hours from San Jose surrounded by beautiful rivers, lush rainforest, and two active volcanoes in the town of Turrialba. Still a secret to heavy touristy crowds and home to Costa Rica’s best-kept secrets in natural wonders, culture, and adventure. This tucked-away little mountain town has many comparing the vibe to a Central American version of Bend, Durango, Boulder, or Moab in their early days.  The raging rivers are what put Turrialba in the conversation of professional paddlers and just in recent years the show of the Turrialba volcano with it’s eruptions. Combine that with the countless waterfalls and world-class mountain bike trails makes Turrialba everything and more you can ask for on an adventure vacation.  Most importantly this setting offers a week of adventure and the true essence of Costa Rica. You will avoid touristy crowds and immerse yourself in the authentic side of Costa Rica.

ADVENTURE LEVEL

adventure-level-4

Beginner to Advanced (This itinerary has the luxury of adapting to different levels of adventure)

This 7 day trip includes all the activities that we are very passionate about from mountain biking, canyoneering, rafting, paddle boarding, and zip lining. We can adjust your mountain biking routes based on your level and experience.

After 17 years in the adventure industry in Costa Rica, the team from POC (Pacuare Outdoor Center), designed what they consider the best six days of adventure, plus not having to sit in a van for long hours of transportation, not having to deal with large crowds of tourists, and giving you the personalized off-the-beaten-path experience we all long for.

Today you will be met by your POC guide and driver at 6 am. You might be asking why 6 am? The earlier we get up to the volcano, the better chance of seeing it clearly, plus it is good to get out of San Jose before the traffic builds up. We suggest you show up on a mid-day flight the day before and get a good night rest. We can book your first night hotel upon request.

Once you are picked up you will make the drive to Costa Rica’s highest volcano, Irazu. Here you will see the Pacific and Caribbean Ocean from the same spot and learn about the central volcanic range of Costa Rica. After we take a peek down into the Irazu crater, we will drive or bike to the Turrialba Volcano. This is an easy bike ride on country roads literally between two sister volcano craters. It is 85% downhill and a great casual ride for beginners. Those looking for a more intense route that option is available.

The active Turrialba Volcano with it’s smoking crater looks much different than Irazu. We will have lunch and then head down to our next hotel which is the Guayabo Lodge. On our way to the hotel, we will stop and rappel a 160ft waterfall. This is an adventure that is sure to get your adrenaline pumping. Walking over the edge of a 160ft waterfall is one of our most extreme adventures.  This has amazing views of the valley below and the two volcanos. (Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Sleep in a bit today. We will have a nice traditional breakfast. Today is another mostly downhill bike ride with breathtaking views and zig zagging on gravel roads through coffee plantations. We will arrive in the town of Aquiares where you will experience one of the most authentic coffee towns of Central America, Arquiares. Along with the small rural town  we will visit a national monument in the local church of Aquiares which is considered one of the most beautiful churches in the country. After a short stop at town we will hop back on the bikes and bike another 5km to a nearby waterfall. Here we will take bikes to the water’s edge where you can swim in the waterfall, take pictures, and relax for a bit. Once we leave the waterfall we will be a short distance from the POC headquarters which is our office and warehouse in the town of Turrialba. Here we will drop your bikes off, say hi to the office staff, have a cold drink. Once our food settles the adventure continues as we hop back on our bikes and ride to the nearby Angostura Lake. Here we will have the paddle boards waiting for us where we will paddle across the lake with amazing views of the surrounding valley. On the other side of the lake sits the beautiful Casa Turire Hotel where we will be spending the night and enjoying the pool and jacuzzi after an amazing day of adventure and fun.  At this point it will have been two days and you will not believe the amount of adventure we have put into the last 36 hours.  (Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner) Once you are picked up you will make the drive to Costa Rica’s highest volcano, Irazu. Next stop, the Pacuare River, what we consider the most beautiful spot in Costa Rica. You can leave the hotel early on mountain bikes, arriving at the entrance of La Cruz near the town of Mollejones where all the rafts, guides, and gear will be waiting for you. Those looking to rest the legs for the rafting can take the van-ride and a 4×4 down to the river’s edge. Today’s rafting section will be class II and III getting you ready for the second day of rafting of class III and IV. The water temperature is perfect, the scenery is outstanding, the guides are pro’s, and the day can not be anymore perfect surrounded by lush tropical rainforest from start to finish. Your lunch will be prepared for you by the river guides and we take great pride in offering some of the finest food in Costa Rica not to mention we get it all the way to the side of the river for you in a spread that rivals a cruise ship!. Then the day becomes a little more perfect, and that is because you will be staying at POC which is the heart and soul of everything we do. Built with local labor and materials the POC is everything you would expect in an ecolodge. Besides the feeling of glamping and not roughing it, you will be awe-inspired by the views at the POC. While you will only be staying two nights we know a piece of POC will be staying with you forever as it truly is an unforgettable experience. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner) After a short stop at town we will hop back on the bikes and bike another 5km to a nearby waterfall. After a good night’s sleep you are ready to swing through the jungle. POC has made a name for itself with its epic Tarzan swing. This is for those looking for extreme adventure and if you are not ready for it we will warm you up with our zip line. Stretched over 3Km across the river canyon POC’s zip line is where you find the best views anywhere of the majestic Pacuare Canyon. After the zip line we will test your adrenaline on the Tarzan swing. Here you will be hooked into a harness and released by our guides over a ravine and over the Pacuare River with a 60ft drop and a maximum height of 300ft! Another memory for a lifetime. In the evening you will have the chance to sit on the rocking chairs at POC, relax, enjoy the sounds of the river and hear the rainforest come to life at night. The POC guides can take you on a night hike to see one of the largest populations of wild red-eyed tree frogs anywhere in Costa Rica as they call POC home. While you are relaxing the POC guides will be hard at work making another great meal for you, maybe some dance lessons, and a night at POC you will not forget! (Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
After breakfast we will make our way down to the river and get ready for one of the top five single days of commercial rafting you will find anywhere on the planet. The famous Pacuare Canyon is filled with 200ft waterfalls cascading into the river, canyon walls that rise 300ft from the river’s edge, and primary rainforest from from start to finish. Oh we almost forgot the infamous class IV rapids such as Huacas Arriby and Huacas Abajo, Dos Montanas, y Cimarrones!!! Today will be an action filled day with a chance to even enjoy the scenery in the often but short pools between over 50 different rapids. After we take-out of the river we will drive to San Jose hotel for your following day departure, or back to Turrialba to POC headquarters, or you can continue on your excursion to Caribbean or Arenal Volcano. You will have all your luggage waiting for you at the take-out and a chance to shower and clean up before your next destination or making your way home. (Meals: Breakfast & Lunch)

Today we will spend the morning at the beach and then after lunch make our way back to San Jose. This will allow you to be close to the airport for your day 8 departure.

Today you will be transfered to the airport in San Jose with a suitcase of probably some dirty clothes but a heart full of memories and new friends in Costa Rica!

Visit the Arenal Volcano
This extension is for two days before the start of your trip or adds to the end of your trip

If you want to visit one of Costa Rica’s most popular destinations, then the Arenal Volcano is worth a trip. Arenal is a trendy tourist destination, and the crowds and infrastructure reflect a booming tourist town. Along with tourism, there, of course, is a beautiful cone-shaped volcano. If you are in town and the volcano decides to not hide behind a cloud you can guarantee it will certainly be a jaw-dropping moment in life.

This extension includes transfers to the Arenal Volcano, 2 nights in a luxurious hotel, breakfasts, and transfer to the San Jose Airport.

Extension Cost: $275/person (Based on Double Occupancy)

POC Camp

The POC camp is an extension of the POC lodge and while the POC Lodge is located with vast views of the Pacuare River Canyon the POC Camp is down on the river’s edge. While it might not have the view of the POC Lodge it sits on one of the calmest sections of the river making the POC Camp home to one of the river Pacuare’s best spots for taking a swim and relaxing on the river’s edge.

POCsito is a favorite among so many of our guests. It is a glamping experience with some of the important comforts of home.

POC Lodge

Started in 2011 is the POC lodge. If you haven’t figured it out by now POC lodge is our own lodge and what we like to call the “baby” of the P.O.C. Adventure Company. We wanted a lodge on our favorite part of Costa Rica which is the Pacuare River and with the help of locally harvested supplies and labor, the POC Lodge was born.

This is a 180-acre property that runs over 1 mile of the Pacuare River. Our goal has always been to offer as much comfort as possible without steering too far away from our roots of just roughing it on the river’s edge. Our lodge has hot water, a splash of luxury in the rooms, and 5-Star service and attention to our guests.

Our favorite part about the lodge is that we built a short hike up from the river’s edge. We know we have the best views of the Pacuare River canyon and unfortunately pictures don’t even do it justice.

Arenal Paraiso, Arenal

Have you ever wanted to stay the night at the base of an active volcano? Well here is your chance. The Arenal Paraiso is located at the base of the Arenal Volcano with breath-taking views of the perfectly cone-shaped volcano.

Here at Arenal Paraiso’s, you will enjoy the beautiful property which offers much more than just a view. The property has numerous bungalows that offer a splash of luxury while surrounded by lush tropical rainforest. After a day of adventure, you will love making your way back to relax or hang out in the pool at Arenal Paraiso.

Shawandha, Caribbean

Located at the edge of the white sandy beaches of Costa Rica sits the Shawandha lodge.  A perfect blend of eco-style luxury along with the sounds of the ocean and vibrant ambiance of the rainforest.

Shawandha lodge is set up with individual bungalows made out of local wood. You will be sure to wake up to the sound of the local residents such as the howler monkeys and green macaws. After your day of adventure, you will have a chance to relax and enjoy the beautiful swimming pool at the Shawandha Lodge.

Hotel Villa Florencia, Turrialba

Located in the valley of Turrialba surrounded by sugar-cane plantations and views of the smoking Turrialba Volcano sits an old plantation home that has been renovated into a beautiful small hotel named Villa Florencia.

This is a great hotel with a beautiful pool and plenty of space to take long morning or afternoon hikes. The Villa Florencia hotel is a chance to enjoy luxury while feeling like you stook back in time. While you are in the valley don’t forget to look up as the Turrialba Volcano can often be seen doing small eruptions from across the valley.

Casa Turire, Turrialba

Casa Turire has been one of our favorites since we started. The grounds are some of the lushest you will find anywhere in Costa Rica. Casa Turire sits in the valley of Turrialba surrounded by mountains and the beautiful Turrialba Volcano. The most amazing part about Casa Turire other than its great restaurant and home-made sugar cane ice cream is that it sits on a peninsula surrounded by Lake Angostura offering great morning hikes, birding, or SUPing around the lake.
