Costa Rica: Arenal Volcano and Caribbean SUPSurf Adventure
Join in on an amazing week of Costa Rica’s most sought after adventures and spend the second half SUP Surfing on the white sandy beaches of the Caribbean. This is a full week where we promise to keep you busy from start to finish with a few afternoons to relax in the hot springs or wiggling your toes in the sand.
This itinerary has you visiting the most famous volcano in Costa Rica and spending the first 3 nights at the base of the Arenal Volcano. Here you will have a breathtaking view of the volcano and stay in a beautiful hotel surrounded by lush tropical rainforest with the sound of howler monkeys and toucans as you enjoy your evenings in the hot springs after days packed with adventure.

After three days at the Arenal Volcano, we will make our way to the Caribbean coast. Here you will be immersed in the Caribbean culture and have a chance to experience the local cuisine, nightlife, and “don’t worry, be happy” lifestyle. Your days on the Caribbean will be at the infamous Cocles beach known for some of the best waves on the Caribbean. Cocles is a white sandy beach with a small island offshore and perfect for paddleboarding and SUP Surfing. If you have never SUP Surf’ed then we will start you at the nearby Playa Negra where you will spend your first-day learning and we can plan to take your skills to Cocles beach on the following day.
This is a week with your personal private POC guide along with private transportation from start to finish. If you love adventure and have always wanted to surf but thought it might be too hard then Arenal SUP Surfing Adventure is for you.
Today you will be met by your POC guide and driver at the airport. Once all the mid-day flights arrive we will be making our way to the Arenal Volcano. On the bus, you will have a chance to break the ice with your guide, driver, and a small group of no more than 12 fellow adventurers. The drive to Arenal will take you through higher elevations and into the cloud forest where you will then drop down to the northern plains of Costa Rica. Here at the edge of the northern plains sits the monstrous Arenal Volcano. Known as one of the most perfectly cone-shaped and recently active volcanoes on the planet.
We will arrive at the hotel where dinner will be waiting for us and a chance to go over the week’s itinerary with your guide and answer any questions you might have. After dinner, you can retire to your room and get some rest or head to the pool and enjoy the swim-up bar while you marvel at the views of the volcano and the sounds of the rainforest coming to life at night.
Once you are picked up you will make the drive to Costa Rica’s highest volcano, Irazu. Here you will see the Pacific and Caribbean Ocean from the same spot and learn about the central volcanic range of Costa Rica. After we take a peek down into the Irazu crater, we will drive or bike to the Turrialba Volcano. This is an easy bike ride on country roads literally between two sister volcano craters. It is 85% downhill and a great casual ride for beginners. For those looking for a more intense route that option is available.
The active Turrialba Volcano with its smoking crater looks much different than Irazu. We will have lunch and then head down to our next hotel which is the Guayabo Lodge. On our way to the hotel, we will stop and rappel a 160ft waterfall. This is an adventure that is sure to get your adrenaline pumping. Walking over the edge of a 160ft waterfall is one of our most extreme adventures. This has amazing views of the valley below and the two volcanos. (Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Costa Rica, we like to say made the zipline famous. If you have zip lined before but never in the rainforest we like to think you haven’t ziplined before. Today you will put on your ziplining gear and get ready to fly through the rainforest. On cables up to 400ft high in the air that stretch over half a mile in the distance as you zip from platform to platform.
After ziplining it will be time for lunch and you will have the chance to enjoy some more local cuisine. Along with fresh and tasty meals, we also promise to try some of the most delicious fruit and natural drinks you will find anywhere.
Once we have let lunch digest we will make our way to Lake Arenal. Here we will have a chance to take a different look at the Volcano that very few ever get to see. We will get the paddleboards out and paddle across the Lake Arenal and directly up to the base of the Arenal Volcano. This is one of those pictures you will certainly have on your screen saver with you on the paddleboard and the giant Arenal Volcano as your backdrop.
In the evening it is back to the hotel where you will have some more time to relax at the pool before we head into the town of La Fortuna and enjoy the local food and drink.
After a short stop at the town, we will hop back on the bikes and bike another 5km to a nearby waterfall. Here we will take bikes to the water’s edge where you can swim in the waterfall, take pictures, and relax for a bit. Once we leave the waterfall we will be a short distance from the POC headquarters which is our office and warehouse in the town of Turrialba. Here we will drop your bikes off, say hi to the office staff, have a cold drink. Once our food settles the adventure continues as we hop back on our bikes and ride to the nearby Angostura Lake. Here we will have the paddle boards waiting for us where we will paddle across the lake with amazing views of the surrounding valley. On the other side of the lake sits the beautiful Casa Turire Hotel where we will be spending the night and enjoying the pool and jacuzzi after an amazing day of adventure and fun.
At this point it will have been two days and you will not believe the amount of adventure we have put into the last 36 hours. (Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Get ready for one of the most epic adventures ever. We warmed you up with the zipline adventure and now you will be walking off a 200ft waterfall backwards! Don’t worry it’s easier than you think but your heart will be pounding. This experience we refer to as canyoneering. It is basically making your way down a narrow canyon in the rainforest, when you arrive at a waterfall you have your harness on and rappel down a rope, and make your way to the next waterfall. You will be rappelling, rock hopping, and rock jumping into pools as you conquer 5 different waterfalls from start to finish.
After your canyoneering experience, you will be ready for some relaxation. Now you will head to the hot springs and enjoy some time to relax in the thermal waters of the Volcano. It will certainly feel well deserved as you have finished your adventures at the Arenal Volcano and will be moving on the white sandy beaches of the Caribbean coast.
After breakfast we will make our way down to the river and get ready for one of the top five single days of commercial rafting you will find anywhere on the planet. The famous Pacuare Canyon is filled with 200ft waterfalls cascading into the river, canyon walls that rise 300ft from the river’s edge, and primary rainforest from from start to finish. Oh we almost forgot the infamous class IV rapids such as Huacas Arriby and Huacas Abajo, Dos Montanas, y Cimarrones!!! Today will be an action filled day with a chance to even enjoy the scenery in the often but short pools between over 50 different rapids.
After we take-out of the river we will drive to the San Jose hotel for your following day departure, or back to Turrialba to POC headquarters, or you can continue on your excursion to the Caribbean or Arenal Volcano. You will have all your luggage waiting for you at the take-out and a chance to shower and clean up before your next destination or making your way home. (Meals: Breakfast & Lunch)

The POC camp is an extension of the POC lodge and while the POC Lodge is located with vast views of the Pacuare River Canyon the POC Camp is down on the river’s edge. While it might not have the view of the POC Lodge it sits on one of the calmest sections of the river making the POC Camp home to one of the river Pacuare’s best spots for taking a swim and relaxing on the river’s edge.
POCsito is a favorite among so many of our guests. It is a glamping experience with some of the important comforts of home.
Started in 2011 is the POC lodge. If you haven’t figured it out by now POC lodge is our own lodge and what we like to call the “baby” of the P.O.C. Adventure Company. We wanted a lodge on our favorite part of Costa Rica which is the Pacuare River and with the help of locally harvested supplies and labor, the POC Lodge was born.
This is a 180-acre property that runs over 1 mile of the Pacuare River. Our goal has always been to offer as much comfort as possible without steering too far away from our roots of just roughing it on the river’s edge. Our lodge has hot water, a splash of luxury in the rooms, and 5-Star service and attention to our guests.
Our favorite part about the lodge is that we built a short hike up from the river’s edge. We know we have the best views of the Pacuare River canyon and unfortunately pictures don’t even do it justice.
Arenal Paraiso, Arenal
Have you ever wanted to stay the night at the base of an active volcano? Well here is your chance. The Arenal Paraiso is located at the base of the Arenal Volcano with breath-taking views of the perfectly cone-shaped volcano.
Here at Arenal Paraiso’s, you will enjoy the beautiful property which offers much more than just a view. The property has numerous bungalows that offer a splash of luxury while surrounded by lush tropical rainforest. After a day of adventure, you will love making your way back to relax or hang out in the pool at Arenal Paraiso.
Located at the edge of the white sandy beaches of Costa Rica sits the Shawandha lodge. A perfect blend of eco-style luxury along with the sounds of the ocean and vibrant ambiance of the rainforest.
Shawandha lodge is set up with individual bungalows made out of local wood. You will be sure to wake up to the sound of the local residents such as the howler monkeys and green macaws. After your day of adventure, you will have a chance to relax and enjoy the beautiful swimming pool at the Shawandha Lodge.
Hotel Villa Florencia, Turrialba
Located in the valley of Turrialba surrounded by sugar-cane plantations and views of the smoking Turrialba Volcano sits an old plantation home that has been renovated into a beautiful small hotel named Villa Florencia.
This is a great hotel with a beautiful pool and plenty of space to take long morning or afternoon hikes. The Villa Florencia hotel is a chance to enjoy luxury while feeling like you stook back in time. While you are in the valley don’t forget to look up as the Turrialba Volcano can often be seen doing small eruptions from across the valley.
Casa Turire, Turrialba
Casa Turire has been one of our favorites since we started. The grounds are some of the lushest you will find anywhere in Costa Rica. Casa Turire sits in the valley of Turrialba surrounded by mountains and the beautiful Turrialba Volcano. The most amazing part about Casa Turire other than its great restaurant and home-made sugar cane ice cream is that it sits on a peninsula surrounded by Lake Angostura offering great morning hikes, birding, or SUPing around the lake.
